Luxury vinyl flooring (LVT) is prized for its durability and easy maintenance, but it still needs a little care to keep it looking its best. The good news is that a simple routine is all it takes to keep your LVT beautiful for decades.
Here is everything you need to know about cleaning and maintaining luxury vinyl flooring.
Your Simple Daily and Weekly Routine
Most of the time, LVT needs very little.
- Daily – sweep or vacuum to remove grit and sand. These are the number one cause of surface scratches, so removing them regularly is the most important thing you can do.
- Weekly – mop with warm water and a small amount of pH-neutral vinyl floor cleaner. Keep the mop damp rather than soaking – LVT is waterproof, but excess water on the surface leaves streaks.
Choosing the Right Cleaning Products
The single most important rule is to use only pH-neutral cleaners designed for vinyl. Strong household cleaners can dull the protective wear layer.
- Use – dedicated LVT cleaner, warm water, microfibre mops, and isopropyl alcohol for stubborn marks.
- Avoid – abrasive scourers, bleach, ammonia, undiluted floor polish, steam mops at high heat, and wax-based cleaners.
Dealing with Scuffs and Marks
Rubber scuffs and black marks are common on vinyl and usually look worse than they are. A pencil eraser will remove many scuffs. For stubborn marks, dab with isopropyl alcohol on a soft cloth and wipe clean.
Treating Stains
Most stains come up easily if you act quickly. Blot spills immediately, then clean with warm soapy water. For dried-on spills, let the cleaner sit for a few minutes before wiping. Avoid harsh solvents.
What About Scratches?
Small surface scratches on LVT are often less visible than you would expect, and can be minimised by a dedicated vinyl polish or scratch-repair product. Deep gouges may need professional attention – but with proper care, most LVT never gets that far.
The secret to beautiful LVT is simple: keep grit off the surface and use the right products. That is it.
Protecting Your Floor
Felt pads under furniture legs, a doormat at entrances, and a no-shoes policy for the muddy season all dramatically extend the life of your LVT.
